Why is Tracy the HireVue alternative for skilled hiring?

Tracy is built for roles where the second and third questions decide: engineers, specialists and domain experts. We make Tracy, so it's listed first. Every fact about the other tools comes from their own pages, read on 29 Oct 2026.

Interviews like your best expert. Tracy runs natural two-way video interviews and follows up on vague answers, so a candidate who rehearsed the first answer still has to explain how they did the work. HireVue's AI Interviewer scores answers on formats such as a "Custom 1-5 rubric", which suits jobs with clear right answers. Tracy suits jobs where you need to hear how the person reasons.

A candidate in a Tracy interview in the browser. Tracy's caption asks a follow-up about the answer just given: "You refunded before the invoice was fixed. How did you stop the same error reaching other customers?" A side panel quotes that answer.
Tracy's next question builds on the answer the candidate just gave (illustration with sample data).

Tracy's own site gives the example of a backend engineer asked to design a rate limiter, with follow-ups on concurrency, failure modes and testing. Here is how that chain can run. Example: an illustration, not a real candidate.

  1. Tracy: "Design a rate limiter for a public API. Walk me through it."
  2. The candidate describes a token bucket per API key, stored in Redis.
  3. Tracy: "Two requests for the same key arrive on different servers at the same moment. What happens?"
  4. The candidate explains the race and moves the check into an atomic script.
  5. Tracy: "Redis goes down for a minute. Do you let traffic through or block it?"
  6. The candidate chooses to fail open for paying customers and closed for anonymous traffic, and says why.

A candidate who memorised "token bucket" passes step 2 and struggles by step 5. Tracy can also "introduce a coding task, and probe the trade-offs behind an answer", so your engineers spend their hour only on people who can reason about code; AI technical interviews shows a full one. Each interview reports integrity signals (tab changes, abnormal eye tracking, live face detection, average delay before an answer, external screens and other unusual patterns), so you can check that the person who passed did it alone. AI interview cheating detection explains each signal.

Every score, traced to the answer. Each interview becomes a summary "with the participant's own words attached" and direct quotes for context, next to the video and transcript. The AI explains each answer score, so a reviewer can check a strong answer or catch a thin one and defend the shortlist.

Candidates rate Tracy 4.7 out of 5 on average, and they join in the browser with no sign-up, whenever it suits them, so the deeper interview doesn't turn good applicants away. You pay for results, not seats, and a session with no answers is never charged, so you can screen every candidate in depth instead of only those whose CV stood out. Tracy also works for expert vetting and accelerator interviews.

Why do teams look for HireVue alternatives?

HireVue is a full suite: an AI Interviewer, one-way and live video, and security credentials up to FedRAMP. Teams look elsewhere for narrower reasons.

  • The price is hidden. HireVue's pricing page offers a demo and an ROI calculator. Buyers on Vendr report a $20,900 median a year, and Vendr's buyer guide puts the maximum at about $145,000, on contracts that renew unless you give 60 days' notice. Our HireVue pricing guide sets every figure against per-interview pricing.
  • It's hard to change. A G2 reviewer quoted in Willo's review wrote that "HireVue can be difficult to adapt when workflows change." Willo also notes HireVue "is not available in Zapier's app library."
  • The AI interview is a scored voice screen. HireVue describes "two-way voice interviews" scored against your criteria, which tells you whether expected points were covered more than how the person thinks.

Which HireVue alternatives fit which team?

A two by two map of HireVue alternatives. Across: quote only to published price. Up: fixed questions to follow-ups in the candidate's field. Tracy AI Interviewer sits at top right. HireVue sits top left. HeyMilo, Alex, Sapia.ai and Paradox sit bottom left. Ribbon sits just below the middle on the published-price side. Spark Hire and Willo sit bottom right.
Tracy pairs follow-ups in the candidate's field with a price you can see before a sales call.

What do the other HireVue alternatives do well?

Ribbon

Ribbon "screens, interviews and ranks candidates for warehouse, retail, hospitality and healthcare roles." It runs voice interviews that work "on any phone, in 10 languages, with follow-ups", and "Syncs with 60+ ATS out of the box". Pricing is $499 a month for 100 interviews, billed annually, per Ribbon's own comparison page; its pricing page didn't load for us on 29 Oct 2026. It advertises a 7-day free trial.

  • Pick Ribbon instead if you fill frontline roles at volume and candidates are easiest to reach by phone.

HeyMilo

HeyMilo is "The AI Recruiter for teams swamped by applications." It screens by "structured AI voice, video, SMS, and forms", "Operates 24/7 in 20+ languages", gives a "trust score that indicates the likelihood of cheating", and names Bullhorn and JobDiva among its ATS connections. Pricing is by demo.

  • Pick HeyMilo instead if you need many channels and languages, or you're an agency on Bullhorn; see AI interview tools for staffing agencies.

Alex

Alex, from Apriora Inc., interviews by phone, video, SMS and WhatsApp, lists 30 languages and "33+ officially supported ATS integrations", and "scores every application for fraud risk across email, phone, LinkedIn, location and more." Pricing is by demo.

  • Pick Alex instead if your candidates answer a phone call or WhatsApp sooner than a video link.

Paradox

Paradox's assistant, Olivia, offers "Mobile-first automation for frontline workers and managers", lets candidates "choose the best time slot that works for everyone", and replies "in 100+ languages." Paradox for Workday handles "Candidate communication directly through SMS on Workday." Pricing is by demo.

  • Pick Paradox instead if you hire hourly staff at scale and scheduling is the bottleneck.

Sapia.ai

Sapia.ai's pricing "works on a per-hire basis": you "interview and assess as many people as you want, without limits", and it "is designed to best serve companies that hire more than 500 people per year."

  • Pick Sapia.ai instead if you hire 500+ people a year and would rather pay per hire than per interview.

Spark Hire

Spark Hire offers "Unlimited live and one-way video interviews" and helps "surface the right candidates early with AI scoring". "More than 10,000 organizations have used Spark Hire." Video interviews start at $249 a month billed annually, or $299 a month on the monthly plan.

  • Pick Spark Hire instead if a recorded answer to set questions tells you enough and you want a visible price.

Willo

Willo sells one-way video by the role. Willo Lite is "£49 / live role", and you "Pay only for the live roles you use each month", with 150 assessed candidates per role and AI summaries. Willo Enterprise starts "From £2,999 / year", with "50+ native integrations" and Willo Intelligence tools that include follow-up questions.

  • Pick Willo instead if you have a few open roles at a time and want to pay only in months you hire.

How do the HireVue alternatives compare?

How do you choose AI interview software to replace HireVue?

  1. Where are your candidates? Hourly applicants on phones point to Paradox, Ribbon, HeyMilo or Alex. Professionals at a laptop can take a video interview, which opens up Tracy, Spark Hire and Willo.
  2. What decides the hire? If a recorded answer to a set question is enough, one-way video is cheapest. If the follow-up decides, you need an interviewer that asks one, and that's Tracy.
  3. How steady is your volume? Volume that moves with hiring cycles fits per-result pricing (Tracy) or per-role pricing (Willo) better than an annual contract.
  4. What can you test first? Tracy charges per result and its credits never expire, and Ribbon has a 7-day trial. Run one role next to your current first round and compare what your reviewers would have decided.

Questions

What is the best HireVue alternative? For skilled and technical roles where follow-ups matter, Tracy AI Interviewer. For hourly hiring with scheduling, Paradox. For low-cost one-way video, Spark Hire or Willo.

HireVue vs Tracy: which asks better follow-ups? HireVue's AI Interviewer asks "probing follow-up questions" by voice and scores answers against your criteria. Tracy follows up on vague answers on video or audio, can set a coding task and probe the trade-offs behind an answer, and attaches the candidate's own words to the summary, which matters most for technical and specialist roles.

Which HireVue alternatives publish their prices? Tracy, Spark Hire and Willo show a price on their own pricing pages. Ribbon states a starting price on its own comparison page. HeyMilo, Alex, Paradox and Sapia.ai sell by demo or quote.

Is there a HireVue alternative without an annual contract? Yes. Tracy charges per result and credits never expire. Willo Lite is paid per live role each month, and Spark Hire has a monthly video interview plan.

Can I switch from HireVue mid-contract? Check your renewal date first; a buyer note on Vendr says HireVue needs 60 days' notice to opt out. You can run an alternative on one role next to HireVue before then.
