Add Tracy at Qode to VS Code

VS Code connects to Tracy at Qode as a remote MCP server, so you can set up an interview and read its results by asking for them in chat. You add the server once from the Command Palette, then sign in from your browser.

Server address

The steps below use this address. VS Code files the server under tracy-at-qode, the server ID you type when you add it. It is the same Tracy at Qode server.

https://tracyinterview.ai/mcp

Add the server

  1. Open the Command Palette and run:
    MCP: Add Server
  2. Choose HTTP (HTTP or Server-Sent Events) and paste the address from the top of this page.
  3. When VS Code asks for a server ID, enter tracy-at-qode.
  4. Choose Global to have the server in every workspace, or Workspace to keep it in the open folder's .vscode/mcp.json.

Or edit mcp.json

If you would rather write the entry yourself, add this to servers in .vscode/mcp.json, or in your user configuration, which MCP: Open User Configuration opens. Keep the other servers that are already there.

{
  "servers": {
    "tracy-at-qode": {
      "type": "http",
      "url": "https://tracyinterview.ai/mcp"
    }
  }
}

The type is http because Tracy at Qode speaks streamable HTTP. The only other key it needs is url. The sign-in below gives VS Code its access, so there is no token to paste in.

Sign in and approve

  1. Start the server. In the Command Palette, run:
    MCP: List Servers
    Choose tracy-at-qode, then Start Server. VS Code also starts it the first time chat needs it.
  2. If VS Code asks whether you trust the server, check that the address is the one at the top of this page and accept.
  3. Your browser opens on Tracy at Qode. Sign in and approve access. VS Code keeps the sign-in, so you do this once.

Sign-in needs a browser on the same computer as VS Code. Tracy at Qode asks for one permission, named tracy, and acts only on your own account. What that covers is on the privacy page.

A first prompt to try

Once you are signed in, send this in the chat in VS Code:

Set up a customer discovery interview for people who cancelled in the last month, then give me the public link.

Check it worked

  1. Open your Tracy at Qode account and find Connected AI apps. The app is listed, with the time you connected it under Connected.
  2. In VS Code, run MCP: List Servers. tracy-at-qode is listed, and choosing it offers Stop Server, Restart Server and Show Output. Under Chat: Open Customizations, it is listed with the other MCP servers.
  3. Send the first prompt above.
  4. Tracy at Qode answers with a draft: the title, the questions and the result fields. Nothing is created until you approve the draft, so read it, ask for changes and say yes when it is right.

If it does not work

  • tracy-at-qode is not listed by MCP: List Servers. VS Code reads the servers you saved with Workspace from that folder's .vscode/mcp.json only, so open the same folder. A server saved with Global is in your user configuration, which MCP: Open User Configuration opens. To start over, remove it as described under Remove access and add it again.
  • The sign-in did not open or was not finished. Run MCP: List Servers, choose tracy-at-qode and then Restart Server, and accept the prompts again. If you turned the trust prompt down, MCP: Reset Trust clears that decision so VS Code asks again. Sign-in needs a browser on the same computer as VS Code. If no new app shows under Connected AI apps in your account afterwards, the sign-in was not finished.
  • tracy-at-qode is listed but does not connect. Run MCP: List Servers, choose tracy-at-qode and Show Output to read the errors. Check that the url in mcp.json is the address at the top of this page and that type is http. After you change it, choose Restart Server.
  • The server is connected but chat does not offer its tools. Run Chat: Open Customizations and look under Tools, which is where VS Code sets the tools a session has. If the server has changed since you added it, run MCP: Reset Cached Tools to clear the list VS Code kept, then restart the server.
  • Access was removed. If you revoked the app under Connected AI apps, it stopped at once. Choose Restart Server in MCP: List Servers to sign in again, or remove the server as described under Remove access and add it again.

Remove access

To take the server out of VS Code, run Chat: Open Customizations, open MCP Servers, open the ellipsis menu of tracy-at-qode and choose Uninstall. If you wrote the entry in mcp.json yourself, delete it there. To cut it off from Tracy at Qode as well, open your account, find Connected AI apps and revoke it. It stops at once, and you can connect it again later. Stuck? Write to support.
