One-Way vs Two-Way Video Interviews: Which Shows You More?
Fact-checked on 2 Nov 2026 against current vendor documentation and Greenhouse's 2026 candidate survey (see Sources).
TLDR
- A one-way video interview records answers to preset questions. It removes scheduling and keeps prompts consistent, but someone still watches the answers and no question adapts to what the candidate said.
- A two-way AI interview asks follow-ups during the conversation. It can reach the example, constraint or trade-off behind a polished first answer.
- Use one-way video for short, repeatable prompts where the recording itself is the evidence. Use two-way interviews when reasoning and specifics determine who moves forward.

What is the difference between one-way and two-way interviews?
Spark Hire defines a one-way interview as a series of questions that a candidate answers on video at their convenience. The employer can set think time, answer length and allowed retakes. Once submitted, the hiring team watches and reviews the recordings.
A two-way AI interview runs as a live spoken conversation. Tracy AI Interviewer starts from the employer's questions, listens to the answer and asks for relevant missing detail. The host chooses video or audio, and the participant joins in a browser.

| Question | One-way video | Two-way AI interview |
|---|---|---|
| Does it require scheduling? | No | No, when the AI interview is available on demand |
| Can the next question use the previous answer? | No | Yes |
| What does the reviewer receive? | Separate recordings, sometimes transcripts and summaries | A conversation record, transcript and structured result |
| Main review burden | Watch or scan each preset answer | Check the summarized evidence and open the recording where needed |
| Best use | Consistent short prompts and employer-brand video | Examples, reasoning, technical depth and role-specific follow-up |
What does a one-way interview do well?
One-way video removes calendar coordination. Candidates can record before the deadline, and every person receives the same prompts. Employers can add introduction videos, practice steps and retakes. For roles where presentation or a short prepared response matters, the recording is useful evidence.
It can also be the simpler purchase. A team that wants to replace a 15-minute phone screen with three fixed questions may not need a conversational AI. The hiring manager already knows what to ask and expects to watch the replies.
Choose one-way video when:
- the questions should remain identical for every candidate;
- a prepared response is acceptable evidence;
- reviewers want to watch each recording;
- follow-up depth would not change the decision;
- the organization has a clear alternative for candidates who cannot record video.
What does a two-way interview add?
Consider this first answer: "I improved the API and reduced latency." A fixed recording moves to the next prompt. A two-way interviewer can ask what changed, how latency was measured, which trade-off the candidate accepted and what failed in the first attempt.
That branch matters in technical, expert and behavioral interviews. The candidate's second and third answers often reveal whether they did the work, understood the constraint and can explain the consequence. Our software engineer interview questions include follow-ups designed for that purpose.
Two-way does not remove human review. Tracy says it asks questions and writes up what the participant said while the decision stays with the customer. A reviewer should check the evidence, especially for a low score or integrity flag. See what an AI interview report should contain.
What should candidates be told?
Greenhouse surveyed 2,950 active job seekers for its 2026 Candidate AI Interview Report. Among U.S. respondents, 70% said they were not clearly told upfront that AI would evaluate them. Pre-recorded video scored by AI with no person present was the most cited trigger among candidates who walked away, at 33%.
Those figures do not prove that every one-way interview causes drop-off. They show that format, scoring and disclosure affect the experience. Before the interview, tell candidates:
- whether the interviewer is a person, a recorder or an AI;
- whether the session is recorded and transcribed;
- what the system evaluates;
- whether a person reviews the result;
- how to request another format or accommodation;
- how long the process takes and whether retakes are allowed.
Which format fits each hiring job?
| Hiring job | Better starting format | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Short customer-service introduction | One-way | The same short prompts and a recording may be enough |
| Software engineering first round | Two-way | Reasoning appears in follow-ups on code and trade-offs |
| Audition or presentation sample | One-way | Delivery is part of the evidence |
| Domain-expert vetting | Two-way | The interviewer can test specificity and recency |
| High-volume eligibility screen | One-way or structured chat | Fixed questions may decide the stage |
| Behavioral interview | Two-way | Follow-ups can test the detail behind a rehearsed STAR answer |
Run the chosen format on a real role before changing the full process. Track completion, candidate questions, reviewer minutes and next-stage quality. The best AI interview software guide compares products across both formats.

Questions
What is a one-way video interview?
A candidate records answers to preset questions on their own time. No person or AI interviewer asks a question based on the answer.
What is a two-way AI interview?
A spoken interview where the AI responds to the candidate's answer and can ask a follow-up before moving on.
When is a one-way interview enough?
Use one-way video when the team needs the same short prompts from everyone and reviewers are willing to watch the recordings.
When should I use a two-way interview?
Use a two-way interview when the role requires examples, reasoning or trade-offs that usually appear after a follow-up question.
Do candidates prefer one format?
Preferences vary. Clear disclosure, practice, accessible alternatives and human review matter in either format.
